The Arc of Life

As realtors, KMS Team at Compass are familiar with the arc of life.

We help young couples buy their first home. We’re there as their families grow, and when they need more space. If they relocate -- across town, or across the country -- we work with them to replicate the house they’re selling, or perhaps try something entirely new. Years later, when they become empty nesters, we work together to find a smaller, more manageable space.

In the past, that meant moving into some form of assisted living. Today -- as Americans live longer and stay active for many more years, and as housing options multiply -- there are lots more ways to downsize.

Ranch-style homes, and other styles with a first-floor master bedroom, are in vogue right now. Whether built decades ago or newer construction, these plans allow you to keep the space you want -- but most of what you need every day is all on one level.

Older ranches may need updates. The thought of renovating may be daunting (and may sound expensive). That’s where Compass Concierge comes in. It is helping our sellers update these homes into the show pieces you dream of – and the work is done before you sign on the dotted line. Back in the day, the housing stock in suburbs like Westport consisted entirely of, well, houses. That’s no longer true. Condos, townhouses, apartments -- all have been added to the mix. Many are the perfect size for empty nesters. Throw in the amenities -- pools, tennis courts, gourmet kitchen; no gutter cleaning, leaf raking or snow shoveling -- and the appeal is apparent.

Condos and apartments are available everywhere: on the Post Road and other streets, from Greens Farms to Saugatuck. New construction is popping up all over town too. From smaller townhomes rising at the Daybreak property, to the stunning Bankside condos to be built on the Saugatuck River (represented by KMS Partners), downsizing -- but not downgrading -- choices abound.

Location is important to downsizers too (you know that famous real estate saying!). Moving to a more urban spot -- in town, or within walking distance -- often means moving to a smaller location. Of course, the proximity to more activities, action and accessibility is a big draw.

Yet sometimes you don’t need to downsize at all. Empty nesters who remodel their homes can create intriguing spaces out of unused bedrooms, for example. New products and services include sensors that respond to a range of medical conditions, and fixtures that make life easier for older residents. We’re happy to help you learn what’s out there, if you want to stay right where you are. Whatever you’re looking for, KMS can help. Enjoy your empty nesting years -- in a “nest” that’s perfect for you.
