It’s summer and that means the beach, sailing, golf, tennis, grilling, outdoor concerts and surprise … the library.
You read that right. With countless outdoor attractions, one of Westport’s most popular is inside.
But it is quite a space. The handsome Westport Library hugs the Saugatuck River, anchoring downtown. That makes it an attractive destination. Yet it’s what goes on beneath the soaring roof, on three magnificent floors, that makes it our go-to spot even on the most gorgeous day.
The library opened in its current location (the former town landfill – sssshhhh!) in 1986. An 18-month transformation project reimagined the entire place – its physical offerings, programs and potential – and created a big buzz at its completion in 2019.
The interior was redesigned to be more dynamic, flexible and interactive. A central forum with a stage, LED screen and theater-style seating for over 400 people filled the main floor. Three state-of-the-art multimedia studios paved the way for lectures, discussions, concerts and more. The energy was astonishing.
A few months later, the pandemic struck.
While the transformation had promised a seamless integration of digital and on-site experiences, COVID accelerated the pace. Over the past 16 months, the Library held hundreds of virtual events. Presenters were world-renowned; some would never have been able to travel to Westport. Library users here (and around the world) realized how vital and stimulating this institution is.
Now the Library has opened back up. Once again, residents and guests access hundreds of thousands of books, periodicals and reference materials. Reading programs are in full swing – Imagine Your Summer for kids, interactive StoryWalks for Families and the Summer 2021 Reading Challenge for adults. Students, business owners, jobseekers and retirees utilize special resources like Ancestry.com, Consumer Reports and LexisNexis. Meeting rooms are open again; groups gather to collaborate and innovate. The café – with indoor and outdoor seating, and a much-more-than-coffee menu – is back in business too.
The MakerSpace is back welcoming tinkerers and creators of all ages and abilities. Film workshops, podcasts, Verso Studios and Camp Explore inspire and educate. Children flock to the top floor, enjoying books, games and special sessions.
The Westport Library hums with activity. Folks of all ages seek information, gain knowledge, exchange ideas, and share experiences. It’s the perfect summer place. (For more information, go to www.WestportLibrary.org)
PS: If you’re at the Library any Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., stroll over the footbridge to the Imperial Avenue parking lot. That’s the site of the Westport Farmers’ Market.
Started by Paul Newman (who knew more about food than just salad dressing, salsa and lemonade) in 2006, it’s grown into one of the most popular (and tasty) markets in the state. Dozens of vendors sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to meat, breads, ice cream, kombucha and pet food. It’s GMO-free, locally raised, and delicious.
The Farmers’ Market also hums with chef demonstrations, music, food trucks and educational seminars. It is Westport’s place to be every Thursday – before or after the Library. (For more information, go to www.WestportFarmersMarket.com)
