We like to say real estate is about people, not just houses. Getting to know our clients and understanding their needs, wants and aspirations is truly the best part of our job. Can AI help match your ideals with a potential home? Certainly, but that's not where the magic happens.
The magic happens as we drive down the street and you realize a park is within walking distance from the home. It occurs when we sit down for lunch and discuss the wetland concerns of a home that is perfect on paper. Or when you step inside a home that didn't make the AI cut, and you realize that removing a wall could create the open concept kitchen of your dreams.
Efficiency isn't the same thing as experience.
We also use technology to help us value a home—3 beds, 3 baths, 2,200 sq. ft., on an acre in this neighborhood is worth X. But until you step inside, assess its condition and look for the unexpected, X is just a guess. We'd love for you to hear the conversations at our weekly team meetings, where ten agents exchange insights about local homes. What does it back up to, how does the layout feel, is there ledge in the backyard or can a pool be added? Answers come as quickly as the questions. We know our market, by town, by neighborhood, by home.

Westport's Flat Iron—Compass' New Home |

|
| A young Horace Staples (1801-1897) founded a building supply company, beginning his journey as one of Westport’s most successful entrepreneurs. Venturing into transportation, he purchased a fleet of sailing vessels, owed a pier on the river and helped establish the Westport Steamboat Association, which regularly carried freight and passengers to New York City. He established Westport’s first bank in 1852 and a second bank in 1963. Both were housed in a building erected by Staples, now known as the National Hall, at the west end of the Post Road/Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge.
Staples’ two banks were merged into one entity, Westport Bank and Trust, in 1913 and in the boom after World War I it became a major commercial and residential lender in the region. Many bank officials became new homeowners in the area now known as the Kings Highway Historic District (read more in our blog about this district).
The bank moved across the river in 1924, to a new building—the Westport Bank and Trust Building, designed by acclaimed architect, Charles E. Cutler. The building, now on the National Register of Historic Places, “occupies a prominent position at the intersection of Post Road East and Church Lane. Fully conforming to the triangular shape of its corner lot…the bank serves as an anchor”. Standing proud at 87 Post Road East, the building welcomes residents and visitors alike to the main commercial area of Westport.
As realtors we understand the importance of location, are intrigued by history, appreciate fine craftsmanship and admire architectural design. As we look forward to our 2026 move across the river into the historic Westport Bank & Trust building, we are in awe of those that had the foresight to create, maintain and improve the building and the town of Westport.
